I got this from Chaotic Noise Productions along with Expendable Citizen and the first Suppression demo, but that label isn't indicated anywhere on the cover. There's a similar overall crusty aesthetic and anarchist political bent to this, while sonically it's really something quite all its own; within the general approach of audio experimentation are some excellent noise tracks, cool use of samples, and some punk and even folkish elements. It's a bit disappointing that we didn't get more...

Another crazy compilation I assisted with. The rather cheeky concept, and I can't recall who came up with it, was the melding of powerviolence and HNW. In practice, we let the artists interpret this idea pretty freely. 17 artists in about 14 minutes.

Ya know, I suspect this one's kind of a classic. I think it was gifted to me at some point by Bryan Day, a member of Seeded Plain and perhaps more importantly the proprietor of [Public Eyesore Records](http://www.publiceyesore.com/). Honestly, dude is fascinating. I've seen Seeded Plain live a few times and been present for a few other shows he's been involved with over several years before he moved out west and I kinda miss him and hope we get a chance to hang again some day. Anyway, if you...

Excellent material from both bands here. The Cripple Bastards side lists 44 song titles but as is the case with a lot of noisecore it's pretty useless to try to split them apart so it's all one file here. The VH side is more grindy but still raw as fuck. There's some wacked-out delay effect all over everything that's kind of distracting. Still pretty rad.

A solo project by Steveggs that seems to have been spurred by a spell of being stuck in bed sick and bored. Uneasy-listening ambient made up of echoed spoken vocals and improvised guitars recorded on a karaoke machine. Along similar lines as 3.2 or "Confused Everyday" from "You Are Afraid", plus a couple Pile Of Eggs outtakes and an early live noisecore set by Schnauzer thrown in to fill up extra space.

I first heard Make It Stop via the inclusion of the track "Breadfuck" on the Audio Terrorism compilation. It was one of my favorite things on that tape, so I wrote to them to see how I could get more of their stuff and told them how the track reminded me of early Swans. Got back this tape and a note saying "thanks for the comparison to Swans, they rule!". Make It Stop's sound is some great sludge-noise with lo-fi 4-track production; many of the tracks are instrumental,...

Among the acquisitions from my used tape trawling at the old Cedar Falls Co-Op Records was this odd little item. Obviously the cool-looking cover was a factor in the decision to grab it. Musically it's a horny-on-main concoction of electronic drums, nicely grooving bass lines, gauzy washes of shoegazey guitars reminiscent of Curve, evoking deep-summer heat and steam rising from grates over humidity-glistened city streets at night, with a deep-voiced lead vocalist, mixed right up front, who...

One of my favorite Sockeye recordings. Tracks from it got re-used on other releases later but they don't compare to the experience of hearing this thing straight through. It's supposedly a live recording, though it's unclear whether there's any audience present besides Sockeye themselves - but they do a fine job of heckling themselves. The "stage banter" on this thing is utterly legendary, as are songs like "Your Dick Is A Junkie" and the band's skill at careening from one...

Another C-90 compilation, but much less on the heavy side than those I've posted recently. This is from 2011 on a label called Greentape and is more in the realm of bedroom lo-fi, casio, folky, acoustic, and the odd experimental track. It has a good bit of that '90s DIY lo-fi indie vibe. Names I recognize from elsewhere include Teaadora, Office Park, and (D)(B)(H). A nice mellow listen. I tried to even out the volume levels a bit but I didn't try very hard.

One of my favorite pastimes in the 1990s was hanging around Co-Op Records in Cedar Falls picking through the used cassette racks looking for stuff that looked interesting, especially anything that looked self-released or like a demo tape. Part of the reason for this was that I had a startling lack of ability to hold down a job consistently in those days so funds to spend on music were limited, and I could score a lot of these sorts of tapes there for as little as $2 each. But also, I was just...

I've a thing for 1990s noise-tape comps, and here is one of my favorites, only partly so for the fact that I'm on it. _Shroud_, like the Zyon label itself, focused on ambient noise rather than noisecore, and was also one of the best-produced examples of its genre; the copies were home-dubbed but still cleaner than usual due to some semi-professional production work, and the inserts were _color_ photocopies! Zyon was run by a guy known as Moth, based in Spokane, WA, and put this thing out in...

Here's a brand new one I just digitized last week! This 1995 tape was a solo side project of Matt from Morbid Vomit. Musically, it sounds a good bit like Morbid Vomit, but with "clean" vocals and more lyrics about weed. Kid Rock gets namechecked well before he'd hit the major labels. The songs ramble on a bit but if you're stoned enough it's all good fun.

Good ol' 1990s tape weirdness from the legendary Steveggs. On this tape pretty much what happens is the Pile Of Eggs/Egg Scab Radio mastermind and a buddy identified as "Dreadhead" dropped some acid and started recording. The result is some ambient and techno-ish goofing, a few metal guitar riffs, and over it all Steveggs rambles incoherently through a pitch shifter. Nothing earth-shattering but kind of a fun ride.
